SMG stands for submachine gun and the name describes the weapon perfectly. SMGs are automatic weapons but not the full size, weight, and caliber of a rifle. They are lightweight and shorter in length than a full sized machine gun. They use pistol ammunition which is why they have also been referred to as machine pistols.
