Today, hunting rifles mainly shoot cartridges, but air rifle hunting is becoming increasing popular. This Umarex Hammer air rifle fires a .50 caliber slug at speeds comparable to some firearms.
Even though the muzzle velocity is lower than an M4 or 9mm firearm, it’s important to remember that we’re talking about a 550-grain .50 caliber bullet here. This projectile is downright lethal without needing any gunpowder.
The advantages of using an air rifle for hunting include less recoil and softer report. Umarex describes the recoil as a firm push, unlike a powder firearm’s sudden punch.
Many air gun designs are hampered by a single-shot only configuration, but the Umarex Hammer is magazine-fed. Each magazine contains two slugs and can be detached, keeping the weapon unloaded for safety. The straight-pull bolt action allows hunters to fire the second shot without excessive delay.
The Umarex Hammer has several rails for accessories to keep up with modern attachments. The Picatinny rail at the top accepts many scopes used for hunting today. However, the handguard uses M-LOK slots. These slots allow users to mount lights and lasers.
Made by Walther, a famous German company known for high-quality firearms, the barrel is a fine example of German engineering.
The 1:24 twist is also perfectly calibrated for the .50 caliber slugs the Hammer fires.
A hunting rifle should be responsive for quick shots, and the Hammer’s trigger has a 2.5-pound trigger weight, which is very light and helps with accuracy.
The PCP tank is made of carbon fiber and is non-removable. When full, it can fire three shots at full power. The fourth shot will be almost 90% of maximum velocity before requiring a refill.
